Aboriginal Action Plan

The Office of Fair Trading’s Aboriginal Action Plan involves making our services more accessible to Aboriginal communities right across New South Wales.

 

The journey begins

In 1998, the Office of Fair Trading developed and launched the first Aboriginal Action Plan (AAP). The AAP represented a major initiative for the Office of Fair Trading and involved ten inter-related initiatives.

Regional Aboriginal services program

Research clearly indicates that Aboriginal communities prefer face to face contact for getting information or assistance.  To improve access for Aboriginal people, the Office of Fair Trading has employed 11 Aboriginal Customer Service Officers and an Aboriginal Programs Coordinator in 10 Fair Trading Centres across NSW: Parramatta, Dubbo, Grafton, Hurstville, Lismore, Newcastle, Orange, Port Macquarie, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong.

Community partnerships

Aboriginal Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Service

The Office of Fair Trading funds community groups to run four Aboriginal services under the Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Program (TAAP)

The Aboriginal Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Services (TAAS) provide important assistance to Aboriginal people regarding tenancy issues and are located in:

  • Dubbo, Western NSW Aboriginal Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service
  • Grafton, Northern NSW Aboriginal Tenants' Advice Service
  • Batemans Bay, Murra-Mia Tenant Advice Service
  • Marrickville, Greater Sydney Aboriginal Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service

Aboriginal employment strategy

Aboriginal employment is important to the Office of Fair Trading as we need skilled Aboriginal staff as part of a quality service to Aboriginal communities.

To make long term gains, we have developed an Aboriginal Employment Strategy for each year.  The broad goals are:

  • to increase the number of Aboriginal staff, and
  • to provide appropriate support and career development for existing staff.

Aboriginal tenancy program

The Aboriginal community has identified tenancy as the most common and highest priority consumer issue. The Aboriginal Tenancy Program informs tenants, agents, property owners and Aboriginal housing providers about their rights and responsibilities. To assist parties to resolve tenancy disputes. To reduce discrimination in the private tenancy market and to establish effective partnerships with government agencies and peak bodies which administer tenancy programs and services.

Registry of Co-operatives and Associations Aboriginal services program

The Aboriginal Services Strategy for Cooperatives and Associations is to enhance service delivery to Aboriginal cooperatives and associations through:

  • Employment of Aboriginal staff;
  • Promotion of the benefits of the cooperative model to communities;
  • Targeted assistance during formations process;
  • Ongoing training and support to existing cooperatives and associations.

National partnerships project

The Office of Fair Trading is participating in national projects concerning consumer protection for Aboriginal people including:

  • The Book-up Initiative-with the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC);
  • The Storecharter Initiative-with The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC);
  • Being a member of the National Indigenous Consumer Working Party to establish a National Indigenous Consumer Strategy (addressing Indigenous consumer issues for the next 5 years) endorsed by the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs (MCCA).

Aboriginal people who need advice or assistance with consumer issues, are encouraged to ring the Office of Fair Trading on 13 32 20 and ask to speak to an Aboriginal Customer Service Officer.
