Tenants advice and advocacy program

Tenants Advice and Advocacy Program (TAAP) is a triennial program. The program provides funding to non profit organisations to provide information, community education, advice and advocacy services to public and private tenants in New South Wales.

Key dates

Funding is provided for a 3-year period from 1 July 2008 – 30 June 2011.

Who can apply?

Incorporated not-for-profit organisations may apply for the operation of tenancy advice and advocacy services to residential tenants throughout New South Wales.

Who can't apply?

The following cannot apply:

  • organisations based outside of New South Wales
  • organisations not incorporated
  • for-profit organisations
  • landlord organisations.

What will be funded?

This program provides funding for both direct services and resource services.

The direct services assist tenants to understand and enforce their rights under the legislation through the provision of tenancy information and advice, and advocacy on their behalf.

The resource services provide assistance and support to direct services to enable them to achieve high quality service provision.

Current priorities

As part of Fair Trading’s consumer protection and social justice policies, funding is provided to non profit organisations to provide information, community education, advice and advocacy services  for New South Wales tenants. Programs/services targeting high risk tenant groups such as Aboriginal tenants, non-english speaking tenants, elderly tenants, disabled tenants, residential park residents and those in supported accommodation are also provided.

Direct services operate in defined regions covering specific Local Government Areas and/or Statistical Divisions.

These areas are: Inner Western Sydney, Inner Sydney, Eastern Sydney, Northern Sydney, South Western Sydney, Southern Sydney, Western Sydney, Illawarra/South Coast, Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast, Far North Coast, North Western NSW, and South Western NSW.  The direct aboriginal services cover Northern NSW, Western NSW, Southern NSW, Greater Sydney.
