Bunk beds
The Fair Trading Amendment (Bunk Beds) Regulation 2010 prescribes a product safety standard for bunk beds.
The safety standard commenced on 28 May 2010 and complements the Commonwealth safety standard for bunk beds that was introduced on 11 March 2003.
The new safety standard requires suppliers of bunk beds to adhere to mandatory requirements which include only the key safety features of the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4220:1994. The key safety features relate to the provision of guardrails to the upper bunk and the elimination of head entrapment and hanging hazards.
The standard applies to unincorporated suppliers operating within NSW. The complementary Commonwealth standard applies to incorporated suppliers operating throughout NSW and unincorporated suppliers operating across jurisdictions.
The Regulation was made pursuant to section 26 of the Fair Trading Act 1987 which allows mandatory safety standards to be made.
