Hot water bottles

The Fair Trading Amendment (Hot Water Bottles) Regulation 2009 commenced on 29 May 2009. The Regulation amends the Rubber Hot Water Bottles Standard. The Regulation requires suppliers of hot water bottles in NSW to comply with certain provisions of the British Standard for hot water bottles (BS 1970:2006) as it includes key safety requirements that are widely accepted and it is used internationally. The Regulation complements the new Commonwealth Trade Practices (Consumer Product Safety Standard) (Hot Water Bottles) Regulations 2008 that commenced on 1 June 2008. The key difference between the previous NSW standard and the NSW complementary standard is that it will now also include polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bottles.

The standard has been included in the Fair Trading Regulation, as provided for under section 26 of the Fair Trading Act 1987 which allows mandatory safety standards to be made that control performance, design or methods of manufacture, of a specific kind of goods supplied in trade or commerce. The purpose of such requirements is to prevent or reduce the risk of injury to a person.

The hot water bottles safety standard will capture unincorporated businesses supplying and distributing hot water bottles in NSW.
