Builders banned for not doing their homework
3 January 2008
NSW Fair Trading Minister, Linda Burney, today said that six builders have had their licences cancelled for failing to meet their continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.
Ms Burney said CPD is important in the industry as it raises standards, benefiting builders and consumers by reducing the risk of costly disputes.
“Fair Trading undertook an audit of 400 building and swimming pool building licence renewal applications earlier this year to check compliance with CPD requirements,” Ms Burney said.
“That audit has resulted in these six people having their licences cancelled.
“Despite requests from Fair Trading, they were either unable or unwilling to provide evidence of having undertaken CPD and subsequently had their licences cancelled late last year.
“Fair Trading is committed to a modern, educated and professional residential building industry and those who don’t want to play by the rules can expect the same treatment.
“I congratulate the majority of builders are undertaking the required level of work to ensure they keep up to date with technical advances and the other requirements of running their business.”
