All that glitters is not safe - candles recalled
5 February 2008
NSW Fair Trading Minister, Linda Burney, today alerted consumers to the national voluntary recall of potentially fire-hazardous glitter candles.
Ms Burney said the Office of Fair Trading has successfully negotiated the removal of the candles with the suppliers – TRS Trading Group Pty Ltd, trading as The Reject Shop.
“In January, Fair Trading learned that a customer had purchased a packet of four candles covered in gold glitter and that they had caught alight on her table, resulting in several small fires,” Ms Burney said.
“Fair Trading carried out investigations on the product, to see if it complied with the product safety order for candle holders and decorations.
“During the testing, the candles caught alight from their own flame and burnt for longer than the prescribed time of five seconds.”
Ms Burney said the glitter candles come in several different colours and sizes and are completely coated in a thick layer of the fine glitter.
“The barcode numbers affected are 22172549, 22207592, 22207753 and 22207685.
“TRS Trading Group has supplied approximately 17,000 of these glitter candles Australia-wide since November 2007.”
Ms Burney urges customers who have purchased the candles to return them to their closest Reject Shop for a full refund.
“For further information, customers can call The Reject Shop toll free on 1800 633 886.
“The Reject Shop has published a product recall notice in the Sydney Morning Herald today.”
