Take time to choose your tutor

5 February 2008

With students returning to school this week, NSW Fair Trading Minister, Linda Burney, today reminded parents to do their homework when choosing a tutoring service so that it is right for their child.

Ms Burney said tutoring services, whether face-to-face, computer-based or online can play an important role in complementing the fine education being delivered by our schools.

“Most tutoring services do the right thing by their clients, but it’s those that operate unethically or fail to provide an optimal level of service to suit the needs of the child, that parents need to be aware of and avoid,” Ms Burney said.

“Last year the Office of Fair Trading received 48 complaints about tutoring services, including face-to-face and computer packages.

“Before signing up with a tutoring service, parents should ask questions about the service such as how long it’s been in business and whether it belongs to a relevant industry association with an enforceable code of conduct such as the Australian Tutoring Association.

“Parents need to make sure they read any contract carefully before signing so that they know exactly what they’re getting for their money and whether the service will meet the learning needs of their child.

“In the case of computer-based tutoring packages – make sure the course is compatible with your computer hardware and software and if considering an online course ensure you have a fast enough internet connection to run the course efficiently.”

Ms Burney said it was important that parents also find out about refund and cancellation policies so they know where they stand in case they want or need to cancel the service.

“The Tutoring tips for parents fact sheet provides important information on the types of tutoring available, the questions parents should ask of any prospective tutor and advice on how to avoid the fake offers and devious operators in the industry.”
