Don't get your heart broken after Valentines Day
14 February 2008
In the wake of Valentine’s Day, NSW Fair Trading Minister, Linda Burney, issued a timely warning to singles looking for companionship via introduction agencies and online dating services to do their research before deciding on a service.
Ms Burney said changing trends in society like lower marriage rates, increased divorce rates and single households has helped foster the introduction agency industry.
“New technology has also seen an exponential increase in the number of online dating sites and singles using them,” Ms Burney said.
“Consumers should be mindful that introduction agencies are commercial entities whose goal at the end of the day is to make a profit and should enter any agreements with their eyes wide open.
Last year the Office of Fair Trading received 74 complaints about introduction agencies and online dating services, relating mainly to disputes over refunds, unsatisfactory service, misleading and deceptive conduct and overcharging or charging above the quote.
“Make sure you take every precaution just as you would if you were engaging in any other marketplace transaction such as buying a car or paying for a holiday – know exactly what service you will be getting before parting with your money,” Ms Burney said.
“The same rules should apply as with all other contracts and they are – read the fine print and ensure you are aware of all the terms and conditions; check that all of the services offered are included in the final quote; do they have a refund policy and a cancellation clause?”
Ms Burney said when interacting online make sure you are satisfied with the security of the website.
“Be careful when providing credit card or bank details to someone you do not know or trust and make sure to keep a hard copy of all online transactions and contracts,” she said.
“Most introduction services do the right thing, but consumers should be careful not to be blinded by the prospect of love when signing on with a service.”
