Fair Trading visits Trangie, Cobar and Warren

5 March 2008

The Office of Fair Trading will be flying the consumer protection flag in Trangie, Cobar and Warren next week (11-13 March).

NSW Fair Trading Minister, Linda Burney, today said staff will visit local community and health centres, Aboriginal Land Councils, senior citizen centres and schools to provide information and conduct presentations about their rights and responsibilities as consumers.

“While visiting local pre-schools and day care centres, the Fair Trading team will meet with childcare workers to discuss the importance of product safety of children’s products and toys,” Ms Burney said.

“‘Revved Up’ and ‘Money Stuff’ programs will be conducted by Fair Trading for high school students in the area to raise awareness about consumer and financial literacy issues they will encounter as young adults and some they have already encountered as teenagers.

“The students will be provided with information about the different methods for purchasing a car, arranging finance and insurance and for checking the mechanical condition and registration details of used cars.

“Young people are often targeted by crooked business operators and pushy sales people.”

Ms Burney said builders will also be an important focus of the program – a home building seminar will be held on Tuesday at 4.30pm at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

“While the seminar is open to all tradespeople, builders and swimming pool builders will receive two CPD points for attending.”

“An association seminar, open to all, will be held on Wednesday at 5.30pm at the Warren Sporting & Cultural Centre. The seminar will cover information about running an association and will address recent amendments to the Associations Act which came into effect on 1 March. The seminar will cover information about limited liability and the role of the Public Officer.”

Ms Burney said on Thursday in Warren, Fair Trading will conduct a business inspection program – staff will visit local businesses to speak one-on-one with business operators and hand out the Good Business Matters guide, an essential reference tool for new and existing business operators, providing a snapshot of the rights and responsibilities of a business under fair trading law.

“In today’s competitive marketplace small business owners need to be well informed and one step ahead in order to succeed,” Ms Burney said.

“This visit is part of Fair Trading’s commitment to deliver services to regional New South Wales through its Regional Access Program by getting out of the office and into the community.”
