Fair Trading visits Mt Druitt and St Marys
10 March 2008
The Office of Fair Trading will be flying the consumer protection flag this week (10 – 14 March) in the Mt Druitt and St Marys areas.
Ms Burney said the Mt Druitt and St Mary’s Community Access Program, one of many conducted throughout the state each year, will offer advice and information to individuals, community groups, and businesses about their rights and responsibilities in the marketplace.
“Three ‘Money Stuff’ programs will be run for high school students in the area to raise awareness about consumer and financial literacy issues that they will encounter as young adult consumers and some they have already encountered as teenagers,” Ms Burney said.
“As well as young adults, toddlers will also be a focus of the week when Fair Trading visits Colyton Little Tiggers Playgroup. Fair Trading staff will meet with parents to discuss the importance of product safety of children’s toys.”
Ms Burney said a home building seminar will be held at 5.30pm at St Mary’s Band Club on both Wednesday. While the seminar is open to all tradespeople, builders and swimming pool builders will receive CPD points for attending.
“Further information sessions taking place throughout the week include a financial literacy seminar for the Aboriginal community, information sessions for self-managing landlords and one for real estate agents, and a Fair Trading information seminar for the Sudanese community.”
Ms Burney said a Community Services Information Day and Expo will also be held at the St Mary’s Band Club on Thursday 13 March from 10am to 2pm. The Expo is specifically aimed at providing information to local community workers and will include other Government organisations.
“During the week, business inspection programs will also be conducted. Staff will visit local businesses to speak one-on-one with business operators and hand out the Good Business Matters guide, an essential reference tool for new and existing business operators.
“This visit is part of Fair Trading’s commitment to deliver services to New South Wales communities by getting out of the office and into the community.”
