Minister supports education and training for home building industry
30 June 2008
NSW Fair Trading Minister, Linda Burney, announced $160,500 per annum funding to support education and training projects for the home building industry.
Ms Burney said six organisations across NSW will be awarded funds for projects, allocated under the Office of Fair Trading’s Home Building Grants Program.
“The funding is aimed at supporting education, training and research programs that benefit tradespeople and consumers through raising consumer awareness and improving building industry standards,” Ms Burney said.
“Funding will go to training courses on home building contracts, programs to encourage industry best practice and innovation and support for the training of electro-technology apprentices.
“This is a constructive way for Fair Trading to help ensure that members of the building industry are well trained and the quality of homes built and paid for by consumers in NSW are top notch.
“In the long run, we may well see fewer disputes between builders and consumers.
“And, at a time when the nation is facing a skills shortage crisis and the home building industry is suffering from the downturn in the economy, Fair Trading is pleased to be able to assist financially to help secure the future of the industry.”
In 2007, Fair Trading received 5,406 complaints from consumers relating to home building.
