Consumers warned about Inverell builder

9 July 2008

Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney today advised New England consumers about trading difficulties being experienced by Inverell builder, Bannister Corp Pty Ltd.

Ms Burney said the Office of Fair Trading was yesterday provided with information suggesting that Bannister Corp Pty Ltd could be experiencing financial problems.

“Fair Trading then made contact with Mr Neal Bannister who confirmed that the company was experiencing some financial difficulties and that he had engaged an accountant to review the financial viability of the company,” Ms Burney said.

“Mr Bannister has indicated the company is not currently under the control of an administrator.

“He has further advised that he has approximately 11 houses under construction with all but two houses to a point where the roof has been completed.

“Mr Bannister said he has contacted all affected consumers and explained the situation to them and that he is making enquiries with other builders to complete the homes.”

Ms Burney said Calliden is the home owner warranty insurer for Bannister Corp Pty Ltd.

“Consumers are encouraged to make contact with Mr Andrew Parker, Construction & Warranty Risk Manager, from Calliden on 03-8878 3804 to determine if an insurance claim can be lodged at this stage,” she said.

“The Office of Fair Trading will work with Calliden, Bannister Corp Pty Ltd and consumers to ensure the completion of the remaining homes.

“If consumers have any concerns regarding the quality of the work or the amount of progress payments being requested they should contact Fair Trading on 13 32 20.”
