Nowra Aboriginal community consumer information day a success

Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney today opened the Nowra Aboriginal Community Consumer information day giving the local Aboriginal Communities a chance to find out how they can better access Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal Services (CTTT) services.

Ms Burney said the information day provided an opportunity for the local Aboriginal community to find out how the CTTT can help them resolve consumer disputes.  It is also a chance for the CTTT to hear from local Aboriginal organisations about how the processes can be streamlined to encourage Aboriginal people to bring their problems to the CTTT.

This successful information day is the latest in a series of initiatives from the CTTT.  “The recent establishment of the Tribunal’s Aboriginal Consultative Forum will allow it to obtain input from Aboriginal organisations to develop culturally appropriate information” Ms Burney said.  

Similar local events are planned for other parts of the State, and this will help strengthen and improve the partnerships between the CTTT and Aboriginal communities.

The Consultative Forum will be involved in helping to develop new products aimed specifically at providing the Aboriginal community with appropriate information.  Some of these products will be available shortly from the Tribunal.

Kay Ransome, the CTTT Chairperson distributed copies of a new information product that will assist Aboriginal people to get help in bringing tenancy issues to the CTTT. 

The CTTT provides consumers with efficient and affordable dispute resolution services.  It can help people resolve their problems around tenancy matters; cars repairs or problem new cars; faulty white goods and electrical equipment and issues in strata schemes. Around 64,000 applications are received each year, and the majority relate to tenancy disputes. The CTTT has eight registries located in metropolitan and regional New South Wales, and hearings are held in 95 venues across the State.
