Minister for Fair Trading, Virginia Judge, and Member for Shellharbour, Lylea McMahon, today urged local residents to find out more about their consumer rights at a free seminar to be held at the Shellharbour Workers Club on 19 March 2009.

Ms Judge said the seminar would focus on the Consumer Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) and how people can access its services.

“My priority as Minister is to ensure consumers’ rights are protected and that people know where to turn if things go wrong,” Ms Judge said.

“When Lylea McMahon raised the idea of an information session with me, I thought it was a great way of helping Shellharbour residents to understand their rights and responsibilities,” she said.

Ms McMahon said she wanted to emphasise the role of the Tribunal in resolving tenancy issues.

“The overwhelming majority of cases heard at the Tribunal – 76 per cent - relate to tenancy disputes,” Ms McMahon said.

“I particularly urge local residents, whether they are tenants or landlords, as well as community workers and real estate agents to join Minister Judge and me at the information session.

The afternoon will also cover general topics, including:

• What is the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal and what can it do for me?
• How to apply to the CTTT
• What decisions can the CTTT make?
• How hearings are organised and conducted; and
• Tenancy-based case study presentations.

“You will hear from a Tribunal member and CTTT staff and have your questions answered on the day,” Ms Judge said.
