Educating Aboriginal consumers about the CTTT

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge will be launching a new education brochure in Dubbo today aimed at teaching Aboriginal consumers how to get a fair go.

Ms Judge said Getting a Fair Go in PDF format (size: 564k) was designed and written by Aboriginal people to increase the awareness and understanding of Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) services amongst Aboriginal communities.

“I am very proud to be launching this brochure which represents another important milestone in the partnership between Aboriginal people and the CTTT,” Ms Judge said.

“The brochure was produced by the CTTT’s Aboriginal Consultative Forum to ensure the material and language was culturally appropriate.”

Ms Judge said the CTTT could help Aboriginal consumers sort out problems such as:

  • rental bonds and tenancy matters
  • purchase or repair of new or old cars
  • faulty white goods
  • electrical equipment
  • strata or community schemes.

Getting a Fair Go clearly outlines all the steps Aboriginal consumers need to take to have their case heard by the CTTT, in language they can understand,” Ms Judge said.

“The brochure’s artwork was created by Aboriginal artist Mandy Davis and tells the story of the CTTT process.

Ms Judge said the brochure was the first of many initiatives that would be used to promote an ongoing partnership between the CTTT and Aboriginal organisations.

“Last year I launched the play Deadly Dollars which was produced and performed by indigenous Australians to educate Aboriginal communities about money management,” Ms Judge said.

“Now the CTTT is working on an Aboriginal DVD which will use storytelling to explain how the CTTT process works from start to finish.

“This is about making it easier for Aboriginal consumers to understand how they can resolve their issues and get a fair go.”

The CTTT was set up in 2002 as an independent body to hear disputes. It receives more than 65,000 applications each year. The majority of disputes are resolved within one month and about 70 per cent are resolved within 35 days of lodging applications.
