Consumer, Trader & Tenancy Tribunal 2009 results

Tenancy matters topped the list of disputes taken to the NSW Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal in 2009.
Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge said a total of 58,312 applications were received by the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) last year.
“The CTTT plays a vital role in helping consumers resolve disputes,” she said.
“Around 74 per cent of disputes are finalised prior to, or at, the first hearing each year.
“This is a fantastic result and proves the CTTT’s informal, low cost and accessible dispute resolution service is working.”
Ms Judge said last year’s disputes covered a range of issues including:
| Tenancy | 30,380 |
| Social Housing | 12,984 |
| Goods and Services | 6,658 |
| Home Building | 3,500 |
| Residential Parks | 1,706 |
| Strata & Community Schemes | 1,444 |
| Motor Vehicles | 1,272 |
| Commercial Division | 308 |
| Retirement Villages | 60 |
The CTTT sits at each of its eight registries and 70 other locations around the state.
“The Tribunal helps people reach agreement through conciliation, a process that allows both sides to have greater control over the outcome,” Ms Judge said.
“If conciliation is not successful, a Tribunal Member hears and evaluates all presented evidence then issues a binding and legally enforceable order.”
Consumers can lodge a CTTT application online in most divisions and generally receive immediate advice about when and where their dispute will be heard.
“The cost of applying is low, from $5 for pensioners and students, with a flat fee of $34 for the majority of matters. A fee waiver can also be sought for people experiencing financial hardship,” Ms Judge said.
“If someone in a regional area is two or more hours travel time away from a hearing venue, then a telephone hearing can be organised.”
