Targus power adaptor recall

30 April 2010

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge is urging consumers to check their laptop power adaptors following the national voluntary recall of an adaptor that is a potential fire hazard.

Ms Judge said Targus Australia initiated a recall of its Universal Power Adaptor (models APM64AU-02 and APA64AU-02) following reports of overheating and melting of the connecter which slots into the laptop computer.

“Luckily there have been no injuries reported, with only one product returned to the manufacturer showing evidence of fire,” Ms Judge said.

“Consumers who have purchased these power adaptors should stop using them immediately and contact Targus Australia for a replacement product, free of charge.

“I understand 5,754 of these products have been sold nationally with around 2,100 sold in NSW since September 2009.

“These products have been sold through major retailers, including Bing Lee Electronics, Domayne, Harvey Norman, JB Hi Fi Group, Joyce Mayne, Officeworks Superstores, and Toshiba.”

Ms Judge congratulated Targus Australia for acting swiftly to remove the products from the shelf.

“It is important that all electrical goods are safe to use,” she said.

“Voluntary recalls play an important role in product safety by minimising the risk to consumers.

“When initiating the voluntary recall of defective goods, a trader must notify the relevant state and territory consumer protection agencies within two days of deciding to conduct the recall.”

Consumers should contact the Targus Customer Service Manager, between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday on toll free 1800 641 645 to organise a replacement adaptor.
