Minister warns consumers to check electric blankets
5 May 2010
Minister for Fair Trading Virginia Judge today warned NSW consumers to check their electric blankets after GSM International announced a voluntary recall of Linda Mistral brand electric blankets.
Ms Judge said it was vital that people ensure that all electrical goods are safe to use.
“The keys to electrical safety are being aware and taking care,” Ms Judge said.
The following models are being recalled as they pose a risk of electric shock and fire:
- SUPSLMAN-LS
- SUPSLMAN-LS/F
- SUPSLMAN-DQ
- SPLSFW-LS/F
- SPLSFW-DQ/F and
- SPSFW-K/F.
The recalled models have the following batch codes: WE001/0804, WE001/0807, WE001/0813 and WE001/0815.
“These models are being recalled because the supply flexible cord located at the connector to the blanket can rupture, causing an electrical short, resulting in a risk of electric shock or fire,” Ms Judge said.
“While there have been no injuries reported in NSW, consumers who purchased these blankets should stop using them immediately.”
Consumers should call 1300 373 993 between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday to make arrangements for the delivery of a replacement controller.
Approximately 7,800 blankets were sold between March 2008 and November 2009 at Harris Scarfe stores throughout Australia, including 48 reported as sold in NSW.
Ms Judge said with the onset of winter, many people would be bringing heating appliances out of storage.
“Electric blankets brought out of summer storage may present a fire hazard and should always be checked for signs of wear and tear before use,” she said.
“If you have any doubts about appliances or fittings such as power points or lights, have them tested by a licensed electrician.
