Newcastle Fair Trading expert rewarded for exceptional service

8 June 2010

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge has congratulated NSW Fair Trading Regional Manager for the West, Hunter and North regions, Paul Coles, who was today presented with a Fair Trading award for outstanding service.

Mr Coles was one of 16 recipients to receive an award, the majority of which were presented by Minister Judge at an event in Sydney on Friday last week. Mr Coles was presented with his award today in Dubbo, the city in which he commenced his Fair Trading career in 1996.

Ms Judge said Paul epitomised the concept of public service and his efforts were quietly helping shape improved consumer outcomes in New South Wales, particularly for indigenous people.

“Paul developed the highly successful regional and community access programs in Fair Trading, which take services and staff to communities across the state to deliver targeted compliance and education initiatives,” she said.

“He has also been a staunch advocate for improvements in indigenous consumer protection and helped develop Fair Trading's Aboriginal Action Program. He is currently the Chairperson of the National Indigenous Consumer Strategy.”

Fair Trading Assistant Commissioner, Andrew Gavrielatos, who presented Mr Coles with his award today, said Paul displayed absolute professionalism and integrity in all aspects of his work.

“Paul is much loved and highly regarded by all Fair Trading staff, not just those for whom he has direct responsibility,” he said.

“Honest to a fault, he is skilled at dealing with all manner of consumer problems.

“A rugby union tragic, Paul also has significant “off the Fair Trading field” experience, taking junior rugby union teams on overseas tours.

“Dealing with every sort of trouble a group of 15 year old rugby players can get up to, has equipped Paul well for delicate conflict resolution.”

Mr Gavrielatos said the great affection with which Mr Coles was held, would mean the entire Fair Trading family would celebrate his recognition and achievements.

“Paul is the kind of public servant the public wants and deserves,” he said.

“He is charming, hard working and ethical and his empathy and enthusiasm inspire his colleagues.”
