NSW budget protects Central Coast consumers

8 June 2010

The Keneally Government will invest nearly $588,000 to deliver frontline support services to Central Coast consumers and traders.

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge said the commitment was part of a total investment of $195.7 million in Fair Trading services in the NSW Budget.

“The Keneally Government is building better Fair Trading services for the future of families and business people on the Central Coast – one of the fastest growing regions in NSW,” she said

“We support Central Coast residents through community organisations, industry grants and outreach services, including financial counselling, no interest loans and tenancy and advocacy advice.

“Consumers and traders can also access services through the Fair Trading Centre in Gosford which employs 11 staff.

“Fair Trading has an excellent reputation for supporting, educating and helping those in need.”

The Keneally Government will fund a range of Central Coast services over the next financial year, including:

  • Central Coast Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service – $265,498
  • Gosford/Wyong Financial Counselling Service – $100,988
  • San Remo Financial Counselling Service – $98,948
  • Wyong Shire NILS® (No Interest Loans Scheme) – $32,856
  • Gosford City NILS® (No Interest Loans Scheme) – $32,856
  • Eastlakes Family Support Financial Counselling Service – $29,418 and
  • Coast Shelter NILS® (No Interest Loans Scheme) – $27,380.

Last year, 4,270 Central Coast residents received assistance from these vital services.

Central Coast Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service Coordinator Sidonie Gnauck welcomed the State Budget.

“There has been an increase in contacts from tenants searching for accommodation and those threatened with losing their rental properties due to mortgagee and repossession matters,” she said.

“The service also provides regular information sessions for people living in residential parks on their rights under the Residential Parks Act.”

The Gosford Fair Trading Centre is open Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.
