Ticket scalping online survey extended

6 August 2010

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge today announced the online ticket scalping survey has been extended until 31 August.

Ms Judge said the survey is part of a comprehensive national ticketing review being carried out by the Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council with the help of NSW Fair Trading.

“So far Fair Trading has received more than 220 submissions since the survey opened on the 30 June,” she said.

“I want consumer’s voices to be heard loud and clear which is why the survey has been extended.

“Ticket scalping is an issue that always comes up when a popular concert or event is being held in NSW.

“However, NSW Fair Trading has only received 40 complaints about ticket scalping in the past five years.

“This is your chance to have your say and tell us if ticket scalping is a widespread problem.

“We need to hear from you so that we can determine if stronger measures need to be introduced to control ticket scalping at a state and national level.”

The review looks at:

  • why scalping occurs
  • the different forms it can take
  • its impact on consumers and the industry and
  • local and international control approaches.

Ms Judge said NSW consumers have a right to expect fair access to tickets for popular events at a reasonable price.

“Scalping can restrict supply and unfairly inflate prices, sometimes by hundreds of dollars, and scalpers’ activities hurt legitimate businesses as well as individuals,” she said.

Consumers and interested groups can take part in the online survey at this website. The national review is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.
