Fair Trading visits Young
10 August 2010
Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge is urging Young consumers and traders to learn more about their rights and responsibilities during an upcoming Regional Access Program.
Ms Judge said Fair Trading staff would be carrying out compliance activities, business inspections and promoting consumer services in Young, Temora, Cootamundra, Harden and Binalong from Monday 16 to Friday 20 August.
“The first Regional Access Program took place at Broken Hill in 1998,” she said.
“Over the past 12 years, these programs have played a vital role in educating communities about Fair Trading services.
“Regional Access Programs are run on a regular basis around the state and bring Fair Trading staff and services into the community, so consumers and traders know who they can turn to for advice or support.”
Ms Judge said Fair Trading inspectors would be carrying out a range of compliance activities, including checking licensing and business name compliance at motor dealers and by home building tradespeople.
“Compliance checks benefit local consumers, lead to better business practices and promote a strong working relationship between Fair Trading and traders,” she said.
“Local businesses and tradespeople will also benefit from attending presentations that focus on their areas of operation.
“A range of free information sessions is being held for associations, home builders, motor dealers and motor repairers.”
Ms Judge said school students would also be the focus of a number of Fair Trading information sessions.
“Information will be provided to teenagers about buying a car, their consumer rights and managing their finances,” she said.
“Senior students from Hennessy College will take part in a Revved Up session while indigenous students at Young High School will listen to a Kooris and Cars presentation,” she said.
“Money Stuff financial literacy sessions will also be delivered to students at Young High School.
“Business Studies students at Young TAFE will learn about consumer rights, consumer protection laws and the Fair Trading requirements for business operators.”
Ms Judge said educating the whole community was a vital part of the program and a Fair Trading information stand would feature outside the Donges Supa IGA in Boorowa Street Young on 19 August from 10am.
“Fair Trading will also be visiting playgroups and delivering product safety packs, including information on safe toys, nursery furniture and baby products,” she said.
“I encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the services and support offered by NSW Fair Trading.”
