Results from Fair Trading checks in Moree
11 August 2010
Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge today released the results of a recent NSW Fair Trading education and compliance campaign in Moree.
Ms Judge said the results from the week long campaign showed that some local traders needed to improve their compliance with Fair Trading laws.
“Between 21 to 25 June, 109 businesses were visited, where Fair Trading officers carried out a range of compliance inspections, including checking licensing at motor dealers and motor vehicle repairers, travel agents, as well as checking business names,” she said.
“In total, 63 breaches were detected, 21 inspection reports and one written warning were issued.
“Notably, the level of compliance by motor dealers was disappointing, with 46 breaches detected.
“The breaches involved failing to display and record the correct particulars relating to a vehicle for sale.
“I expect a better level of compliance in the future from this section of the industry.”
Ms Judge said motor vehicle repairers showed a stronger level of compliance at 67 per cent however there was definite room for improvement with 11 breaches detected at 14 premises.
“The breaches included a failure to correctly display licence details,” she said.
“While these breaches are of a minor nature there is no excuse for non compliance in these instances and Fair Trading will closely monitor all those businesses where breaches were detected.
“On the other hand, of the 47 businesses visited to check on business name compliance, 43 were compliant.”
Ms Judge said local businesses and trades also benefited from attending presentations that focused on their areas of activities, as well as the visits to their premises.
“Fair Trading staff delivered ten information sessions attended by a total of 180 participants, covering topics on associations, tenancy, motor vehicles, home building and general fair trading information,” she said.
“Twenty five members of the local indigenous community participated in a Kooris and Cars presentation that was delivered jointly with the Roads and Traffic Authority.
“Fifty one year 10 and 11 commerce and business studies students from Moree Secondary College and St Philomena’s School attended the Money Stuff program where they learnt about refunds and warranties, credit and mobile phones.”
Ms Judge said Fair Trading staff also distributed 250 Seniors Guides to Moree Meals on Wheels for their clients and over 200 product safety kits to parents of pre-schools and day care centres.
“As a result of the visit, local consumers were now more aware of their rights and where to go for information and help,” she said.
