Information evening - new laws for incorporated associations
17 August 2010
Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge today encouraged representatives from incorporated associations, multicultural community organisations and volunteers to attend a free information evening in Parramatta next week on new laws for incorporated associations.
Ms Judge said the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 and the Associations Incorporation Regulation 2010, commenced on 1 July this year.
“The new laws govern community services and groups, including sporting groups, non-government organisations, interest groups and multicultural and religious groups,” she said.
“The information evening will be conducted in partnership with two of NSW Fair Trading’s Think Smart community partners, Anglicare and Granville Multicultural Community Centre.”
The Member for Parramatta, Tanya Gadiel, encouraged local people to attend the event.
“There will be plenty of opportunity for everyone to get involved, ask questions and obtain printed information on the night,” she said.
“There are many associations established and operated by migrants to support settlement in Australia.
“Many are in western Sydney and they need information to effectively manage their community groups and it is important associations are aware of their responsibilities under the law.”
Granville Multicultural Community Centre Manager, Ms Paula Chegwidden, said the information evening would provide an opportunity for existing associations to understand the new laws.
“Understanding changes will help us comply with new requirements and effectively manage our associations,” she said.
“Anglicare and Granville Multicultural Community Centre are pleased to work with Fair Trading to educate Think Smart partners, community organisations and service providers.
“It is important to keep community groups from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds up-to-date with Fair Trading legislation and issues.”
The information evening will be held on Monday 23 August at the Anglican Training Room, Level 3, 16 Parkes Street, Parramatta, starting at 5.30pm for 6pm-8pm.
The information evening is free, but bookings are essential and light refreshments will be served.
Bookings can be made by contacting Cheryl Webster at Anglicare on 9895 8064 or Paula Chegwidden on 9637 7600.
