National recall of Koala bath robe and bootie sets

24 August 2010

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge is warning parents to check their children’s nightwear following a national recall of Koala Baby bath robe and bootie sets supplied by Toys R Us Australia Pty Ltd.

Ms Judge said the products, sold between November 2007 and June 2010, breached the product safety laws because they did not carry a mandatory fire warning label.

“All children’s nightwear sold in NSW must carry fire warning labels so parents clearly understand the fire risks associated with the product,” she said.

“Children can suffer severe burns or death if flammable nightwear clothing catches fire.

“Parents should stop using the bath robe and bootie sets immediately and return them to their nearest Toys R Us store for a full refund.”

Ms Judge said NSW Fair Trading negotiated the recall with Toys R Us after detecting the breach during a recent children’s nightwear compliance campaign.

“Nearly 3,500 robe sets have been distributed throughout Australia and around 33 per cent of these products may not have the required fire warning label,” she said.

“This sends a strong message to the marketplace to be more vigilant when it comes to children’s nightwear.”

Ms Judge said Toys R Us Australia Pty Ltd has published details of the recall nationally in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, Melbourne’s Herald Sun, The Adelaide Advertiser, The Canberra Times, Brisbane’s Courier Mail and The West Australian.

Toys R Us Australia have set up a national toll free number 1800 241 390 to answer consumers concerns and questions or go to www.recalls.gov.au.

Tips for choosing children’s nightwear:

  • Do not choose nightwear labelled ‘high fire danger’ if your child may be near open heat sources.
  • If you have chosen garments with a low fire danger label, remember that these can still be flammable.
