Top Indigenous Rugby League tournament awards

15 October 2010

Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge today congratulated the winners of the best men’s and women’s player awards at the recent NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout.

The tournament, held at Woy Woy over the October long weekend, attracted more than 25,000 spectators.

“NSW Fair Trading has sponsored the award for the best men’s player since 2000 and the best women’s player since 2005,” Ms Judge said.

“I am thrilled the NSW Fair Trading ‘Player of the Series’ awards for the 2010 tournament have gone to Anthony Mitchell of the Walgett Aboriginal Connections and Eunice Grimes, of the Redfern All Blacks.

“Their names will join those of previous winners and be engraved on NSW Fair Trading perpetual trophies as a permanent memento of their outstanding contributions in 2010.”

Mr Mitchell’s Walgett Aboriginal Connections team was victorious in the men’s final, beating the Mindaribba Warriors from Maitland by a score of 46 – 26.

Ms Grimes’ Redfern All Blacks also triumphed, beating the Tamworth Dinawans 28 – 0 in the decider.

For the past 40 years the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout has been showcasing the best Aboriginal rugby league talent.

Ms Judge said the Koori Knockout is an important social and sporting event that attracts a huge following among Indigenous and non-Indigenous rugby league fans each year.

Both Mr Mitchell and Ms Grimes have asked that their trophies be put on public display.

Mr Mitchell’s trophy will be displayed at the Parramatta Fair Trading Centre, while Ms Grimes’ trophy will be displayed at the Sydney Fair Trading Centre.
