Public warning: home theatre and audio equipment sellers in white vans

22 October 2010

NSW Fair Trading has issued a public warning about a Sydney-based company selling home theatre projectors and audio equipment to consumers from the back of white vans.

NSW Fair Trading Acting Deputy Commissioner Andrew Gavrielatos said Rock N Roll Distributors Pty Ltd, trading as Quick Silver Distribution, had been the subject of numerous complaints.

“Members of the public have reported being approached by sales people engaged by Rock n Roll Distributors Pty Ltd, who are operating from vans and claiming to be selling excess stock at what they say is a fraction of the cost,” he said.

“This equipment is of poor quality, has little or no value and is a potential fire risk due to overheating issues with the projectors.

“I urge the public not to deal with this company and ignore the claims of anyone selling audio or home theatre equipment from the back of van.”

The packaging of the goods often bears brand names such as Marc Vincent, Deutsch Akustik, Symphony Orchestra, Columbia Audio, Oracle Projectors, Rothdale and Apex Digital.

Misleading and deceptive statements are made both verbally and on the packaging, including that the equipment has received various, often non-existent, industry awards.

The public warning is an official document issued under section 86A of the Fair Trading Act 1987. NSW Fair Trading’s investigations are continuing with the aim of taking further
action under the Act.

The areas of concern about the company’s business practices include:

  • claims made by the company that the goods have performance characteristics, uses or benefits that they do not have
  • conduct by the company likely to mislead the public as to the suitability of the goods
  • the supply of goods not of merchantable quality
  • the supply of goods that potentially pose a risk to consumers.
