Safety issue with unbranded LED light tubes
24 December 2010
NSW Fair Trading Assistant Commissioner Michael Cooper today issued a state wide warning to consumers about a possible electrical fault with unbranded T8 LED light tubes.
Mr Cooper said the safety concern with the unbranded T8 LED light tubes was a potential dead short between the Light tube pins at one end and the top aluminium case.
“This could result in the exposed metal being energised at 240 volts and it could be lethal,” he said.
“There have been no reported incidents to date but this is a serious matter and I urge consumers who may have purchased unbranded T8 LED light tubes to stop using them immediately and return to the place of purchase for a refund.
“I also urge them to contact Fair Trading on 13 32 20. We are investigating.”
LED light tubes are a new generation of lights designed to replace conventional energy saving fluorescent tubes.
Mr Cooper said some electrical work may be required on existing conventional fluorescent light-fittings before any LED light tubes can be installed.
“This work must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor,” he said.
“All types of light globes including all LED light tubes have to be safe to use under NSW laws.”
Consumers and contractors are advised not to buy unbranded light tubes of any kind.
National Electrical and Communications Association NSW CEO Lindsay Le Compte said the issue highlighted the importance of industry and consumers purchasing appropriately approved and good quality products.
