Find out about new NSW residential tenancy laws
4 March 2011
NSW Fair Trading Deputy Commissioner Steve Griffin is encouraging people to learn more about the state’s new residential tenancies laws.
Mr Griffin said the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 and the Residential Tenancies Regulation 2010 commenced on 31 January and included more than 100 changes, with benefits for renters, landlords and real estate agents.
An estimated 1.6 million people currently rent properties in NSW.
“The new laws are relevant to most people at some point in their lives, whether as a tenant or a property investor,” Mr Griffin said.
NSW Fair Trading received more than 2,000 submissions on the legislation and conducted four rounds of public consultation with landlords, tenants, the real estate industry and the community.
“The result is greater clarity and certainty in the legislation,” Mr Griffin said.
