Social media to help consumers

NSW Fair Trading is encouraging consumers to use Fair Trading’s You Tube channel and news feed service* and follow Fair Trading on Twitter to keep up to date on consumer issues.

Fair Trading Deputy Commissioner Steve Griffin said social media was helping the agency promote key consumer and trader issues.

“We now have 10 new educational videos on the Fair Trading YouTube channel and website,” he said.

The new videos feature Fair Trading experts providing advice on the following topics:

  • Compliance – why it is important and Fair Trading’s role
  • Contacting Fair Trading
  • Dangerous toys
  • Door-to-door sales scams
  • Motor vehicle warranties
  • Purchasing a home – making an offer
  • Refunds
  • Starting an association
  • Tenancy – the condition report
  • Using a builder or tradesperson.

Mr Griffin said Fair Trading’s wide range of services and community education promoted a fair marketplace.

“In 2010 Fair Trading answered 1.2 million phone enquiries and 220,000 counter enquiries,” he said.

“A record 42,786 people attended educational seminars in the year and website visitor sessions increased by 22% to 3.46 million.

“YouTube, RSS feeds and Twitter enable us to broaden our reach and it’s particularly useful for public warnings and recalls on dangerous goods.”
