Find out about new NSW residential tenancy laws - Tweed Heads

29 March 2011

NSW Fair Trading Deputy Commissioner Steve Griffin is encouraging Tweed Heads residents to learn more about the State’s new residential tenancies laws.

The Residential Tenancies Act 2010 and the Residential Tenancies Regulation 2010 commenced on 31 January and includes more than 100 changes.

Mr Griffin said an information stand will be at the Tweed City Shopping Centre, Minjungbal Drive, on Wednesday 30 March between 9am and 5.30pm and Thursday 31 March between 9am to 9pm.

“NSW Fair Trading has been conducting a statewide information campaign on the new laws,” he said.

“This is the biggest change to the State’s residential tenancy laws in more than 20 years and represents greater clarity and certainty in the legislation for tenants, landlords and real estate agents.

“Fair Trading received more than 2,000 submissions on the legislation and conducted four rounds of public consultation with landlords, tenants, the real estate industry and the community.”

An estimated 1.6 million people currently rent properties in NSW.

Mr Griffin said the new laws are relevant to most people at some point in their lives.

“The new laws fairly balance the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords and it is important for all involved to find out about the changes,” he said.
