Fair Trading urges young people to seek advice

31 March 2011

On the eve of NSW Youth Week, Fair Trading Deputy Commissioner Steve Griffin is urging young people in NSW to seek help from Fair Trading when they have problems in the
marketplace.

Mr Griffin said although Fair Trading provided a range of specialist services and products for young people, many failed to seek help when they needed it.

“Young people often don’t know who to turn to for advice and assistance when they strike problems buying products and services,” he said.

“Young people are a vulnerable demographic but Fair Trading is here to help – call 13 32 20, go to a Fair Trading Centre or lodge a complaint online.”

Mr Griffin said information about common consumer problems confronting young people, including cars, computers, credit, mobile phones and renting was available online, as well as through free publications.

“Young people, like all consumers, have enhanced protection under the new Australian Consumer Law and really need to understand their statutory rights in the marketplace,” he
said.

“If they get into difficulty, our experienced mediators can often help them resolve issues at no cost, saving them time, money and stress.

“It’s often a matter of needing to read the fine print in contracts or knowing that when you buy either a product or service, you have certain rights you are entitled to pursue.”
