NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts is encouraging applications under three Fair Trading industry grant programs worth $700,000.

Mr Roberts said the property services, home building and motor vehicle industry grants would fund education, research and training projects in the three industries, with a focus on raising consumer awareness and industry standards.

“Universities, TAFE colleges, industry associations and registered non-government organisations can apply,” he said.

The $300,000 property services program will improve knowledge of tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities, highlight energy efficiency and enhance education in the property services industry.

Priorities include: training and education of property agents to promote energy efficiency initiatives such as green leasing and the phasing out of electric hot water systems; and improving information for consumers and industry about dispute resolution, trust accounting, legislation and compliance, ethics and professional responsibility, workplace safety and commercial and industrial property practice.

Mr Roberts said real estate agents, strata managing agents, stock and station agents, business agents, buyers’ agents and residential property managers, as well as certificate of registration holders all needed to undertake continuous professional development to have their licences renewed.

“Education programs to improve professional development are therefore a key focus,” he said.

The $300,000 home building program will fund training and skills development in energy efficiency and sustainability, as well as general consumer and industry education.

Priorities include: technical aspects of building work; quality assurance; compliance responsibility; communication techniques and skills; the avoidance and resolution of disputes; standards and safety; and, business management practices.

The $100,000 motor vehicle industry program will help train and maintain a skilled workforce.

Priorities include: educational projects that focus on best practice and innovation; apprenticeship training and employment; and, information and education for consumers.
