Minister to visit St George and Sutherland with local MPs

13 May 2011

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts, together with local Members of Parliament from the St George and Sutherland areas, will visit the Hurstville Fair Trading Centre (FTC) and Consumer, Trader & Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) Registry next Thursday 19 May at 9.30am.

The Minister will spend a full day in the region (program attached) and has invited the MPs to meet FTC and Registry staff and tour the facilities to gain a better understanding of available services and support for consumers.

He will also join the Member for Miranda and Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley to launch a new and improved Seniors Guide* during a visit to the Waterbrook Retirement Village at Yowie Bay at 11am.

Mr Roberts said the Hurstville FTC and CTTT Registry serviced close to one million people living in the southern Sydney metropolitan region, including the St George and Sutherland areas.

“Staff at the FTC and Registry deal with thousands of consumer enquiries and complaints every year,” he said.

The FTC processes more than 8,000 business registration/association transactions and more than 5,000 owner/builder permits, building licences and rental bonds.

The CTTT Registry processes 7.5% of the CTTT’s workload, taking more than 9,000 phone enquiries annually and in the past financial year, received 4,367 applications and held 4,993 hearings, mostly involving tenancy matters.

Mr Roberts and local MPs will accompany Fair Trading inspectors doing checks on shops in Cronulla, Engadine, Bangor and Padstow.

“Fair Trading plays a vital role ensuring retailers understand their consumer responsibilities under fair trading and other laws and these trader visits will, in this instance, serve an educative role for MPs as well as businesses,” he said.

“My Government colleagues and I would like to talk with these retailers, make sure Fair Trading’s message is being effectively delivered and listen to their feedback.”

*The Seniors Guide is one of Fair Trading’s most popular publications, with more than 15,000 copies ordered every year. It includes information on living in strata schemes and retirement villages, preparing a will and advice on avoiding scams.
