Launch of 2011 Seniors guide

18 May 2011

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts will tomorrow join the Minister for Sport and Recreation and Member for Miranda, Graham Annesley and the Member for Cronulla, Mark Speakman, to launch the 2011 edition of Fair Trading’s popular NSW Seniors guide.

Where: Waterbrook Retirement Resort – 19 Wyralla Road, Yowie Bay.
When: 11am, Thursday 19 May.

The Seniors guide is a free consumer information guide for older Australians and covers a large range of topics including information about the new Australian Consumer Law, accommodation, shopping, health, money and cars, all with a consumer focus and useful tips on how to get a fair outcome in disputes.

The Minister said sales tactics where older people were particularly at risk, including door-to-door selling, telephone marketing, mail order offers and internet shopping, were also included.

The latest edition covers recent legislative reforms including those to the Residential Tenancies Act 2010.

Mr Roberts, Mr Annesley and Mr Speakman said older Australians were a common target for scammers.

“We hope every senior citizen in this state gets themselves a copy of the guide and knows that Fair Trading and this government are here to help,” they said.

“Knowledge is power, so educating consumers is key to this and we encourage families to let older members know about this resource. It’s also important they know to call Fair Trading on 13 32 20 to get help.”

Mr Roberts said Fair Trading could help seniors fight back against scams as well as provide sound advice on how to get fair treatment in the marketplace.

“We want seniors to be able to effectively assert their rights about refunds, repairs and remedies for bad or substandard goods and services,” he said.

Mr Roberts said the guide included helpful tips on retirement village living, buying a car, home renovations and maintenance and making a will.

“The Seniors guide is a must have publication for all older Australians living in NSW,” he said.

For a free copy call Fair Trading on 13 32 20, pick up one from your local Fair Trading Centre or order online at the NSW Fair Trading website.
