Motor vehicle repairs draft regulation released for public comment

1 July 2011

Fair Trading Deputy Commissioner Steve Griffin today urged NSW consumers and the motor vehicle repair industry to have their say on the draft Motor Vehicle Repairs Regulation 2011.

The Motor Vehicle Repairs Act 1980 and Regulation set the standards for the motor vehicle repair industry regarding mandatory licensing, repairer behaviour and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Mr Griffin said the draft Regulation will support the objectives of the Act in retaining vital consumer protection measures and minimum standards of conduct for those operating in the industry.

“The proposed Regulation includes minor changes to improve and update the legislation including the simplification of language, standardising the layout and updating some older terminology,” he said.

“Input into the consultation period will help inform the Government of the impacts and current issues facing the motor vehicle repair industry.

“Fair Trading will consult widely with key stakeholders on industry practices and developments, as well as discuss the benefits of the proposed Regulation.

“All interested members of the public and industry will have to the end of July to submit their comments.”

Mr Griffin urged consumers and industry to make the most of this opportunity and have their say on the draft regulation.

“Fair Trading wants to ensure consumers continue to receive the protections they need and industry continues to strive for best practice,” he said.

Comments on the draft regulation can be lodged with Fair Trading up until close of business 29 July.

A copy of the proposed regulation can be downloaded from the Comment on proposed legislation page on the NSW Fair Trading website.
