Tamworth students get 'Revved Up'

3 August 2011

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts said Year 11 high school students in Tamworth should be revved up about their consumer rights this week at a series of Fair Trading information sessions on buying a car.

“‘Revved Up’ teaches high school students their rights and responsibilities when buying a car and Fair Trading experts will be on hand with a range of helpful tips,” he said.

“Students can learn facts about finance, insurance, warranties, registration and running costs, as well as receive a useful pre-purchase checklist.”

Fair Trading will visit six local high schools in Tamworth:

  • 3 August, 8.50 – 9.50am, Carinya Christian School, Boronia Drive
  • 3 August, 11.30am – 1.30pm, Oxley High School, Piper Street
  • 3 August, 3.15 – 4.15pm, McCarthy Catholic College, Tribe Street
  • 4 August, 9 – 10am, Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School, Calala Lane
  • 4 August, 11.15am – 12.15pm, Calrossy Secondary Girls School, Brisbane Street
  • 5 August, 9 – 10am, Peel Technology High School, Gunnedah Road
  • 5 August, 12 noon – 1pm, Tamworth High School, Willis Street
  • 5 August, 2 – 3pm, Calrossy Secondary Boys School, Moore Creek Road.

Mr Roberts said Revved Up provided practical advice and support to teenage consumers.

“Young consumers are often vulnerable in the marketplace,” he said.

“Revved Up gives students a head start and supports them in their decision making by clearly setting out the benefits and problems associated with buying a car.

“Students will also receive some practical hands-on experience by watching a Fair Trading mechanical expert inspect a vehicle.”

Students receive a copy of the Fair Trading publication The Car Buyer’s Checklist – a must have for anyone thinking about buying a car.

Mr Roberts said feedback from students and teachers about Revved Up had been very positive.

“For many senior high-school students, buying their first car is a defining moment,” he said.

“The decision can be highly emotive, so Fair Trading’s message is clear – do your homework and don’t let your heart rule your head when it comes to buying a car.”

Fair Trading provides a services through the Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) that can tell you whether or not a vehicle is recorded as encumbered in NSW, ACT, NT, QLD, VIC and SA.
