Lightning Ridge and Walgett get a good rap

8 August 2011

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts today released results from recent compliance checks by NSW Fair Trading in Lightning Ridge and Walgett.

Mr Roberts said twenty business premises were inspected, including motor vehicle dealers and repairers.

“Price scanning and product safety compliance was checked at supermarkets and retailers,” he said.

Fair Trading officers detected eight breaches, issued four inspection reports and two notices to show cause and delivered two written warnings. No fines were issued.

Most of the breaches involved motor dealers and related to poor record keeping, incorrect information on vehicles and use of the wrong forms.

A second-hand dealer was also issued with a written warning due to an expired licence.

Minister Roberts urged all traders to familiarise themselves with relevant laws.

“Local Fair Trading staff can provide all the advice and information traders need to ensure they are fully compliant with the law,” he said.

“It is vital for local businesses to get the advice they need, to stay on top of their responsibilities and give consumers confidence in their dealings with them.”

The Member for Barwon, Kevin Humphries, said many local consumers and business owners took the opportunity to learn more about Fair Trading services.

“Seven information sessions were attended by more than 100 people, including members of incorporated associations, real estate agents and self-managing landlords” he said.

“Fair Trading also supported local NAIDOC Week celebrations with information stands at Lightning Ridge and Walgett High Schools and two information sessions on consumer rights and tenancy.”

Fair Trading officers visited eight businesses in Lightning Ridge and Walgett to deliver important information on the new Australian Consumer Law.

Fair Trading staff also delivered 240 brochures to seniors, youth and childcare centres during the visit.
