Minister Roberts visits North Western Sydney
12 August 2011
Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts will visit North Western Sydney next week, continuing his community visits around the state.
On Wednesday 17 August the Minister will visit Richmond, Vinegar Hill, Quakers Hill and Castle Hill.
During the visit he will meet with retirement village residents and attend a Fair Trading residential tenancy seminar and a scams awareness seminar, as well accompany Fair Trading inspectors on a price scanning audit (details below).
Minister Roberts said his visits would help promote Fair Trading services.
“I look forward to meeting some of Fair Trading’s most important stakeholders, the consumers and traders of NSW, as well as frontline Fair Trading staff who work in crucial community education and compliance roles,” he said.
The Minister will be joined by several local members of Parliament during his visit.
The Member for Hawkesbury, Ray Williams, will join the Minister on a visit to the Norman Court Retirement Village in Richmond where they will meet residents.
Mr Williams welcomed the Minister’s visit and said keeping in touch with community needs ensures the government delivers the best possible services.
“Fair Trading can help seniors with advice on refunds and repairs, buying a car, retirement village living and making a will,” he said.
The Minister and Mr Williams will also attend a residential tenancy seminar for self managing landlords and real estate agents to learn more about their rights and responsibilities when managing residential tenancy agreements.
Mr Williams said it is vital local agents and landlords get the advice they need to stay on top of their responsibilities and give tenants confidence in their dealings with them.
The Member for Riverstone, Kevin Conolly, will join the Minister to observe Fair Trading inspectors conduct a price scanning audit at the Aldi supermarket in Quakers Hill.
Mr Conolly said Fair Trading regularly inspects the marketplace to ensure retailer and supermarket scanners are functioning properly and accurately.
“Compliance checks promote consumer confidence and lead to better business practices,” he said.
The Member for Baulkham Hills David Elliott and the Member for Castle Hill Dominic Perrottet will join the Minister at a Fair Trading scam awareness seminar for seniors.
Mr Elliott said seniors were a common target for scammers and that older people should not hesitate to ask for help when faced with any consumer related problem.
“Older people are often used to managing on their own and can be reluctant to ask for help or guidance,” he said.
Mr Perrottet said the NSW Government is committed to protecting the consumer rights of seniors.
“Too often we see seniors being scammed or ripped off by itinerant crooks or cold calling conmen,” he said.
“We want seniors across the state to know Fair Trading can help them avoid scams and also provide good advice on how to get fair treatment in the marketplace.”
