Is your Microsoft software genuine?

In February 2010 Microsoft commenced a worldwide release of Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7. This update identifies any non-genuine Microsoft software on your computer, alerts you to the problem and offers solutions.

Non-genuine software may contain programming that is harmful to your computer, such as malware and viruses, and other associated risks.

How will you be notified?

The release of the update can occur in a number of ways – a notification occurring either automatically or via a message on your computer asking if you require the update. You will then receive a report advising you whether there is non-genuine software on your computer. You may also be directed to a webpage with phone and licensing service details so you can get more information.

A 'Look-up' facility is also available from the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/australia/genuine/default.mspx which allows you to run a check to confirm whether your software is non-genuine.

Microsoft has advised that consumers can still use the non-genuine software. However a warning notice will appear on their computer screen at regular intervals.

What should you do if you have non-genuine software?

If your copy of Windows fails validation, you will be directed to a customised web page with details about what caused the failure and recommendations for how to fix the problem. Depending on the specific cause of the problem, these recommendations include:

  • Visit the Microsoft How to Tell website to learn how to determine whether your copy of Windows is genuine Microsoft software. If you believe you received pirated software, you will be able to file a report with Microsoft to investigate further.
  • Check to see whether you qualify for a replacement CD from Microsoft. Some terms and conditions apply.
  • Visit the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Support page for more information.

For more information, contact the Microsoft Licensing Hotline on 132 058.

If you are unable to solve the problem with Microsoft or the point-of-sale trader you can lodge a complaint with Fair Trading.
