Under the Business Names Act 2002 (the Act) a person must not carry on business in New South Wales under a business name unless that name is registered.

The free ‘Business name details check’ allows you to check basic business name registration details online. You are able to search using the business name or the registration number. The search will only find business names that are listed on the NSW Register of Business Names.

‘Business name details check’ is maintained by the Office of Fair Trading and is a record of information relating to current and previously registered business names including:

• business name and registration number
• registration date and registration status
• nature of business
• renewal due date
• ABN
• business addresses
• trading and document history.

Additional information relating to proprietors and their addresses is available, for a fee, from Fair Trading Centres and by mail. This is known as a business name extract.

A business name extract contains the following additional information:

• more detailed description of the registration status where applicable
• proprietors’ names
• proprietors’ addresses
• date of commencement for each proprietor
• date of cessation as a proprietor where applicable
• ACN for corporate proprietors
• preferred address for service of notices.
