Treadmills

If you manufacture, import or sell treadmills in NSW this information is essential for your business.

NSW Products Safety Committee conducted an inquiry into the safety of treadmills following reports of a growing number of children receiving severe friction burn injuries from motorised treadmills.

As a result from 1 June 2009 the Fair Trading Amendment (Treadmills) Regulation 2008 requires all treadmills supplied in NSW to have a warning label permanently attached to them in a visible position, showing the following information:

WARNING: Keep young children away from this machine at all times. Contact with the moving surface may result in severe friction burns.

The warning must:

  • be visible to the user of the treadmill when it is being used
  • show the word ‘WARNING’ in bold upper case letters at least 5 millimetres high
  • show the remaining words in lower case letters at least 2.5 millimetres high
  • be separate from any other warning or label on the treadmill.

Whether you are a retailer, distributor, or importer, you are responsible for ensuring that the treadmills you supply comply with this regulation.

Failure to do so is an offence under the Fair Trading Act 1987 and the maximum penalty is $22,000 for an individual or $110,000 for a corporation. You may also be required to conduct a recall of any non compliant treadmills detected.
