Weights and measures
Weights and measures - a fine balance is needed
How do you know if that kilo of sugar you bought at your local supermarket is just that?
One answer is sweet and simple: just by reading the label on the package. Reading the label on the package tells you the weight and what it is you are buying. And in 99 percent of cases that information is correct. That is why the Office of Fair Trading regulates the scales in retail and industry in NSW via the Trade Measurement Act. This in turn means protection for you, whether you are a consumer or a trader.
In just about every thing that we buy, the accurate weighing and measuring of goods plays a vital part in predetermining how much we receive. So accuracy of weights and measures is very important to consumers, industry and the economy. The fuel that you put in your car, the wool and cotton that go into making the garments that you wear, any grocery item you care to name, that nip of alcohol, supermarket and post office scales, public weighbridges and industrial scales; the Act governs them all and just about everything else that you purchase by weight.
The Office of Fair Trading has inspectors who regularly check weighing and measuring equipment to ensure that you get what you pay for. In addition, licensed organisations certify and carry out repairs to weighing and measuring equipment.
If you think that the product you have bought is underweight you can contact the Office of Fair Trading on 13 32 20 for assistance.
