Electricity network connections

Information for consumers

When you want to connect your home, business or other premises to the electricity distribution network, or get more electricity from the network than is possible at the moment, or need the network to be closer to your premises, you need a suitably qualified person to do the work.

To ensure the electricity distribution network and your connection to the network remain efficient, reliable and safe, only Accredited Service Providers (ASPs) may do this kind of work in NSW.

The Accreditation Scheme

From 27 April 2007 the administration of the Scheme to accredit these service providers was transferred from the former Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability to NSW Fair Trading.

ASPs must have employees or sub-contractors who are authorised by the local electricity distributor to undertake the type of work required. Organisations wishing to apply for accreditation should go to the Electricity network services page for more information.

To help you to choose the right person for the job, NSW Fair Trading provides lists of ASPs. While there are three levels of accreditation, most people will usually need a Level 2 ASP.

Level 1 – construction of network assets

You will need a Level 1 ASP to extend the overhead or underground network if your property is not near the existing network, or if you require the capacity of the existing network (the amount of electricity it can safely distribute) to be increased. This may include high and low voltage works, substations and asset relocation.

Level 2 – service work/connection services

You will need a Level 2 ASP to:

  • install, repair or maintain the overhead or underground service lines between the electrical wiring on your premises and the electricity network
  • install electricity metering equipment
  • connect your service lines to the network and make the connection 'live'
  • disconnect your premises from the network.
