Funerals

At some time we all have to face the prospect of dealing with the passing of a family member or friend. It may be that you are the person who will need to deal with the situation and will need to put in place appropriate arrangements. These arrangements may have been predetermined by the family members and may therefore be subject to the Funeral Funds Act 1979. For more information on your protection under this Act, go to the Contributory and pre-paid funerals section.

In the event of a loss

Here are some points to consider before you go ahead and make the arrangements:

  • Think about the arrangements you want before you actually contact a funeral director. Keep in mind, when discussing with the funeral director, the wishes of the deceased and the family. Don’t be talked into making arrangements that may not have been in mind before the loss.
  • Always consider how much you can afford in making the arrangements.
  • Seek several opinions and options and consult the family before deciding to go ahead with a specific funeral director and arrangements.
  • Make sure you get a written contract with an itemised list of services to be provided together with their costing.

In the event of a dispute with a funeral director you may call the Office of Fair Trading
on 13 32 20 for assistance.

For a list of organisations that can assist you with arranging a funeral go to the Contacts and links section.
