Trampolines

Many children have been injured after falling from a trampoline in their backyard or onto the exposed frame and spring area of some trampolines. Choosing the right trampoline for your child’s use, installing it properly and placing it in an appropriate location in your yard, is essential to minimise trampoline injuries.

Buying a new trampoline

Before buying a trampoline ensure that you have sufficient space in your yard for its appropriate placement. Only buy a trampoline that does not have exposed springs and frame so children cannot fall through or be injured by falling on these hard surfaces. When you install the trampoline you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly.

Existing trampolines

You should regularly check the condition of the trampoline for tears, rust, detachment and general weakening of the structure. If your trampoline is fitted with metal springs, remember to check their condition beneath the padding. Trampolines that have worn safety pads or springs should be refitted with a new padding safety system and new springs.

Placement of trampolines

Here are some safety guidelines for the placement of trampolines in your yard:

  • place on a flat surface
  • ensure the area is clear of obstacles such as concrete, bikes, rocks, over-hanging trees, walls, electrical wires or building structures
  • never place it on a concrete surface as a child could suffer severe injuries by falling onto the concrete
  • provide at least 8 metres clearance above the trampoline
  • ensure the height of the trampoline bed (mat) from the floor is sufficient to prevent the bed from contacting the floor while the user is bouncing. However, the mat should not exceed 1160mm in height.
  • if possible, anchor the trampoline to the ground to eliminate the temptation for children to move it
  • maintain a clearance (fall zone) around the trampoline of 2500mm for open trampolines and 1500mm for closed trampolines
  • store the trampoline safely and correctly when not in use.

Access via ladders

Do not provide access to the trampoline via ladders or boards. If a child cannot get up independently, they may not be at the right developmental stage for trampoline activities.

Age of children using trampolines

Trampolines that measure more than 500mm from ground level are not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Jogger trampolines are recommended for younger children.

Safe use of trampolines

When children are on the trampoline:

  • ensure constant supervision
  • keep toddlers away from the trampoline when it is in use to prevent them from going underneath the trampoline
  • allow only one child at a time on the trampoline
  • teach children to jump in the centre of the mat
  • teach them to climb on and off the trampoline rather than jumping off
  • ensure children do not wear helmets, jewellery, buckles or shoes on the trampoline
  • clearly explain the rules and make sure the children follow and understand them.
