Managing a rental property

When you own a residential property and intend renting it out, you have two options. You can either manage the property yourself and become a 'self managing landlord', or use an agent to manage the property for you.

There are some important issues to consider when making the decision about managing your rental property.

  • Do you have time to liaise with the tenants on all day to day matters including repairs?
  • Are you prepared for the responsibility that this involves?
  • Do you know what your rights and responsibilities are?
  • Do you know the tenants' rights and responsibilities?
  • What are the financial implications of appointing an agent versus self management?
