NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe has congratulated the winners of the men’s and women’s outstanding player awards at the 2013 NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout held over the long weekend.
The NSW Fair Trading Player of the Series for the 2013 tournament has been awarded to Adrian Davis and Ashley Monkland from the Newcastle Yowies men’s and women’s teams.
“Their names will join those of previous winners and be engraved on the NSW Fair Trading perpetual trophy as a permanent reminder of their outstanding contributions in 2013”, Mr Stowe said.
Both Mr Davis’ and Ms Monkland’s trophies will be displayed at the Newcastle Fair Trading Centre until the Knockout again returns to Newcastle in 2014.
The Newcastle Yowies men’s team was victorious in a repeat of the 2012 final at Lakeside Oval in Raymond Terrace, beating the Mindaribba Warriors 17-16 after Gold Coast Titans star Albert Kelly kicked the winning field goal in extra time.
In the women’s final, Ms Monkland’s Newcastle Yowies also triumphed, beating Kempsey 24-16.
“NSW Fair Trading is proud to have been sponsoring the men’s Player of the Series trophy for the past 14 years and the women’s since 2005,” Mr Stowe said.
The Knockout involves teams representing communities and families from all over the state of NSW and has been an annual highlight of the Indigenous community’s calendar since its inception in 1971.
More than 100 teams participated in this year’s event, attracting spectators in their thousands.
