You must obtain an owner-builder permit if you want to build or supervise building on your own private residential premise. This includes managing your own residential building project and performing the coordinating and contracting roles usually undertaken by a builder. These roles include, but are not limited to, constructions, alterations, repairs and additions to a dwelling.
This permit applies to labour and work that requires development consent and has a market value greater than $10,000 (inclusive of GST).
Fair Trading’s owner-builder self assessment tool takes you through a series of short questions and allows you to determine the following:
• whether the building work you are undertaking requires an owner-builder permit
• if you are eligible for an owner-builder permit
• which owner-builder permit application form you should use.
It should take approximately 5 minutes to complete the self assessment.
