Mechanical services

Effective 16 September 2009, mechanical services work is no longer regulated under the Home Building Act in NSW. This means that mechanical services work is no longer licensed by Fair Trading.

This action was taken in response to a Council of Australian Governments commitment to rationalise occupational licensing across Australia to cut red tape.

Ducting and mechanical ventilation is now classed as a minor trade. For more information, go to the Minor trade work page. Anyone who currently holds a mechanical services licence for the purpose of ducting and mechanical ventilation will be contacted by Fair Trading in the near future to discuss migration to the new licence class, or you can contact Fair Trading on 13 32 20.

Licensees who held the Mechanical services class up to 16 September 2009 may be eligible for a refund of their application/renewal fees. You may only be considered for a refund if you do not hold any other Home Building licence classes. To apply for a refund, complete the Refund Request form in PDF format (size: 18kb).
